Selected Applied Scientific Research of

Dr. M. Jamil Andalibi

Researcher,

Professor of Applied Geology at

Research Institute of Earth Sciences,

Founder and Former Director of

Geological Survey of Iran - Shiraz Center.

Preface:

Understanding the Quaternary period systems phenomena (natural and human-induced phenomena), is the basis of studying and understanding seismic activities, instability of earth, engineering geology, civil engineering studies, etc. Fourth period (Quaternary) investigations in different sizes and various phenomena are similar to utilities in reconstruction and identification of seismic and climatic events, and exact times of events closer to present (contemporaneous) play the role of guidelines and can be used to predict future events while being a reliable and reasonable method (paleo-recorder and paleo-seismograms). This knowledge requires sufficient experience, and achieving it, will lead to valuable and conclusive lessons. This method is interpreted from seismic event studies and instability based on field operations and determination method. In modern scientific world, since 1979, the strategy of statistical and instrumental studies has shifted its way due to inability and inefficiency, and the appropriate and systematic study method has focused on determination and field observation method.

Maps

In his over 30 years of expertise, training, management and research the author of this research index (Dr. M. Jamil Andalibi), has been able to prepare or supervise numerous geological and specialized maps (engineering geology, earthquakes, seismotectonics, etc.) of the country (especially the south) with the following titles.

Note: Geological maps are prepared with a special technology which is considered as an artistic technology. A sheet of geological map, includes more than 1,000 pages of new information about the region. The process of collecting and preparing the information, takes place by regular and systematic field, laboratory and office operations. An important factor in this process, is the experience of the geologist in charge and the scientific supervisor, which is a major factor in the accuracy and consistency of information and the time of publication of the map. For instance, preparing a geological map sheet with a scale of 1:100,000, requires a 2-year long-term field and office work. Geological maps are the foundation of all construction activities, etc.

Vast majority of villages in Fars province, have been shifted for many reasons including damage caused by earthquakes or floods, inappropriate location access, limited spread of location, etc. All the suitable site selections of this consultant, have been performed using innovative methods. This has been entrusted to this author at the request of the relevant authorities in many earthquake affected areas as in Fars, Khorasan, Qazvin, Boushehr, Hormozgan and many other provinces. This method, in addition to being innovative, has followed interesting and positive results.

Educational Compilations for Graduate and PhD Levels

1)        Modern Seismotectonics package which consists of 315-page book of modern seismotectonics and corresponding maps published by Takht-e-Jamshid publications and Geological Survey of Iran. The package is a compilation and is the result of 31 years of practical experience and field operations. Different parts of the compilation are taught at the doctoral level of Geotechnics and Earthquake Engineering at Shiraz University’s Faculty of Engineering and other institutions.

2)        Producer of 9 sheets of applied geological maps of major national projects.

3)        Scientific supervision in preparation process of 46 geological map sheets for practical application by engineers, consultants and researchers. Preparing each sheet of map, requires (demands) 2 years of time and is feasible through some special technology which is in fact a specific information technology (IT). Consequently, each map contains about 1,000 pages of new data and information.

4)        Leaflets, in specialties of neotectonics, quaternary, seismotectonics, etc.

5)        Engineering-geological studies of Bidzard dam, a model for consultants.

6)        Objectives and methods of seismic retrofitting (retrofitting against earthquake), guidelines (instruction) for system administrators and country lifelines.
